Get to know this often-overlooked Bosch Dishwasher Feature to Avoid this Costly Professional Quick Fix.
By: Flate Wright/Appliance Technician
For over the five years I’ve repaired appliances professionally, there have been occasions–through no fault of my own!–where I’ve had to charge my customer a full diagnostic fee, just to perform a simple Reset for a Bosch dishwasher. Avoid this costly Customer Instruction service call by getting familiar with these dishwashers’ Reset Feature.
Most modern dishwashers pause the selected wash cycle when the dishwasher door is opened, say to add a dish to the wash load before the dishwasher releases the soap. For many brands and models, the paused wash cycle will automatically start back up where it left off once the door is latched closed. Sometimes machines get old and must be replaced with new ones, other times you move into a new home supplied with Bosch appliances. Some new Bosch owners discover, rather costly so, that many Bosch dishwashers’ models do not automatically start back up or un-pause when the door is shut.
The common complaint concerning this Bosch dishwasher problem is: “the power button is red, but the dishwasher doesn’t do anything. I turned the machine off and on, but that didn’t fix it. I think the pump is broken.” Before going for a replacement pump or motor, find out if a wash cycle was simply interrupted or paused.
If your Bosch dishwasher’s Control Panel is front-facing try, with the door closed, pressing firmly then releasing the Start Button. Wait five seconds for the dishwasher to respond. If the dishwasher sounds like it has a motor/pump movement, then the dishwasher was likely just stuck in a paused cycle state. If the control panel is upward facing, concealing the unit controls beneath the countertop when the door is closed (often referred to as Incognito Design), try opening the door, press firmly then release the start button and return the door to the closed position, ensuring the door latches firmly. Wait for five seconds; if you hear motor movement the unit was likely in a paused cycle state. Wait for the dishwasher to complete the selected wash cycle and indicate through noise or control panel lighting that the wash cycle has completed. If you want to start a fresh, clean, cycle from the beginning without waiting for the selected wash cycle to complete, perform a reset of the dishwasher.
Often overlooked on all brands of dishwashers is the Reset Feature. Depending on your make and model, the reset feature will be marked with an asterisk and the word reset located below the applicable button. On many modern Bosch dishwashers, the Reset button is the Start button, this can confuse some customers. To reset the modern Bosch dishwasher, press and hold the start button for about 3 to 5 seconds. On some older Bosch models, the reset feature may be called “cancel” or “drain”. These older models require a specific Button Press Sequence or what we in the biz call a Key Dance to complete.
The key dance is usually indicated by symbols on the machine control panel as in this example here:
In this example you will press the Regular Wash button and the Rinse and Hold button together for about 3 to five seconds with the door is closed.
When a dishwasher resets, the drain pump is activated and the dishwasher is drained of all water. Once drainage is complete the dishwasher control panel will indicate a Complete or Done cycle and then automatically enter its standby mode.
Toggling the Power Button Might not do the Trick
Pressing the on/off button does not reset the dishwasher’s Electronic Controller for most Bosch dishwashers. Totally removing power from an appliance is what we in the Appliance Technician Industry refer to as a Hard Reset. Hard resetting a household electronic appliance should always be done from the Household Circuit Breaker Box. Find the breaker box and switch the dishwasher circuit breaker to the off position.
Remember to always use safe workplace practices when dealing with household electricity. Now check out the (hopefully) labeled dishwasher circuit breaker. It should be labeled dishwasher or DW for short, and it’s usually a 15 to 20 Amp breaker. Leave the dishwasher circuit breaker in the off position for 5 – 7 minutes, then return the circuit breaker to the on position. All of the machines stored energies should dissipate and all of the electronically stored memories should clear within the 5 – 7-minute time frame. The dishwasher is now ready to begin a wash cycle from the beginning.

OK I had to turn he water off to my dishwasher to work on my faucet and yep I forgot to turn it back on. The wife started the dishwasher and it just sat there. In the morning I turned the water supply on and it still will not run. I pressed and held the start button (unit is less than a year old) and a code 01 popped up. But it will not run. I have not yet done a hard reset would you suggest that or should I call for service? Thanks Do
Don,

Lights are on but dishwasher won’t start the cycle. I’ve tried the reset button goes to 0.01 allows me to set temp etc but nothing. Please can u help please.
Hi Fiona!
We can further assist you over video chat for $35 US. You we will work with one of our technicians to solve your boss dishwasher problem. You can make an appointment here: dev-neli-1.nelihome.com.
Hey Fiona, that’s the reset code. If you close the door when it’s flashing ’01’, it should run for 2 minutes or so, and beep 3 times when done. Then, you press the on/off button to shut it off, press it again to turn it on, and it SHOULD allow you to start it again. (However, I’ve had the issue with mine recently where I go through these steps SEVERAL times, to no avail. The last cycle of these was last night – I thought dishwasher needed repair, only to wake up today to clean dishes! Go figure!)
My dishwasher door when opened will not stay in position it will fall wide open unless you hold it from falling.. How do you fix it?
Code e17 keeps shut down dishwasher
Hi Jim! If you’re still having issues with your appliance, you can book an appointment on our website in one of our techs will help you resolve the issue.
My Bosh dishwasher starts it’s countdown but won’t start
The dishes are left dirty. It makes sounds but it seems that the arms are not rotating but I’m not sure cuz I can’t really peek inside.
Dishwasher when first installed filled but would not continue cycle, then when reset or cancel it drained but would not cycle, then made sure and releveled it the pump ran constantly and would not cycle properly, also the lights for the cycle go out when you Close the door. Any thoughts on what is wrong?
My dishwasher is stuck on drain I tried reset button and it doesn’t work I turned circuit breaker off but freezer and fridges are attached so I cant leave them off for hours and it’s the middle of the night 4am here in Ireland and I’m terrified to go to bed in case it goes on fire . I didn’t leave breaker off for 7 mins tho only 4 or so should ai do that ?

Tried hard reset at the breaker, same results beeps three time, sounds like it’s going to run and then constant beeps
My silenceplus 50 dba is not letting me change cycle types
I have a Bosch, newer 《50 db, incognito style (button setting gs on top of door, hidden by counter when door is closed).. MODEL: SHX87PW55N/11
My problem is similar, i.e., sometimes when I want to start a load, I open door, press start/stop control. The cycle Auto LED illuminates. If I want to change a cycle type or add a function (e.g. half loaf, which is the function i use a lot), Selecting any new cycle or adding any function does not work. What happens is I select the new function, the corresponding LED illuminates, I hear a chirp BUT the new cycle or function setting DOES NOT stay illuminated.
This does not happen all of the time, just randomly. Most times when I see this state, I just leave the setting in Auto, press/hold start, close door, and cycle begins that results in a wash cycle as expected.
Today, I caught our dishwasher in this “state” I described above. As I had time today to investigate this, I called Bosxh Customer Care. When speaking and describing (in detail) the sequence of steps, and behavior of resulting steps, she guided me to do a “soft reset” of the dishwasher.
1. Turn off dishwasher
2. Turn on dishwasher
3. Press and hold the start button for 5+ seconds until the digital display changes to flashing 0:01.
4. Close door
5. Let dishwasher run for this 1 min cycle.
6. Open door, turn dishwasher off
7. Turn dishwasher on
8. Select whatever new cycle or added functions.
9. This worked. In my case, I wanted to add function of half-load.
Hope this helps someone.
The controls are on the top, no led display screen
I have the same problem. Silence plus 46 DBA and no led light turn on. So I have to guess what I am putting cycle on or if I have an issue I have to guess?? Someone please help us?
Thank you
I have error code Eo1. Also the on off switch will not turn off. I turn the breaker off but that did not help.
William, we have this very issue, plus the dishwasher stopped mid cycle and I tried that reset, but it didn’t say to close the door for that 1 minute (didn’t realize it was an actual cycle). I’ll try this, thanks for the info!
Yes, Jean, the instructions are NOT very clear about this. You do have to start that ‘mini cycle’ for it to reset.
Hey i have a serie 8 bosch diswasher.
It says Fault, no communication – switch appliance off/on – if recurs, contact customer service.
What to do here. No error code and Cant find anything about this Fault.
Kind regards
Hi Jay,
We would love to help you with that issue. If our blog article has not solved the issue, you can book an appointment with one of our technicians who can work with you over video chat to solve that problem with your dishwasher. The fee is only $35 US. Thanks! Mary
Thank you! This worked for me. I was at wits end with this.
Sajia, so glad to hear our fix worked for you!
Bought our Bosch diswasher yesterday and cannot get it to come on. Please help!
I have error code Eo1. Also the on off switch will not turn off. I turn the breaker off but that did not help.
The dishwasher does not fill with water I can hear the motor running though
This is the problem I have, but there are no suggestions on the website. Is that because it’s unusual enough to require a visit?
Thank you! You saved me a of time and hassle!
Thank you William! Easy Peasy fix.
I had the 0:01 flashing time pop up. I turned off the machine, and it did not go away. Googled and came up with your information. So as you wrote, I hit the start button and let the ‘load’ run. After it ran the one minute cycle, the “clean” light came on and then I was able to set the load the way I wanted too – extra dry, heavy, sanitized, etc. THANKS SO MUCH!!!
William. Thank you Thank you Thank you! Your instructions worked! After getting similar instructions but minus closing and opening door in steps 6 and 7 from a Bosch customer service rep – they didn’t work – I was ready to return our new Bosch dishwasher. I did one last search on the internet and found your instructions. They are a godsend. This is our third Bosch dishwasher and the only one with this problem reset issue. I only hope I don’t have to go through this little reset exercise every time I need to do a load of dishes as it is tedious and anxiety-producing.
William, looks like your instructions have helped many people! I, too, go through this process periodically when my dishwasher won’t start. However, recently the process won’t reset it the first time. Last night I went through it maybe 5-6 times, flipped the circuit breaker, etc. Finally, I went to bed. Woke up to clean dishes! So something worked. But it took many times and tries. Wondering if this has happened to you, and what might be causing this. Thanks!
Are you avail now? Fairly new bosch silent won’t start, light flashes red, no reset button pushing will get it out of auto
The arrow over button is depressed and stays that way making its function nil. Suggestions?
Hi Jeff! So sorry we took so long to answer you. If you are still having an issue with your arrow button, you can chat with us or make and appointment. You can also call 833-876-0900. dev-neli-1.nelihome.com. Talk soon, Team Neli

Hi Bosch dishwasher no power the control unit ?
my controls won’t work and I have tried everything to reset them
I hate my Bosch because if this. It’s not so much an issue for my wife and I who have become familiar with it, although still a nuisance. But when we have visitors who inevitably disrupt the wash to add a dish because they didn’t know it was running, it becomes a real problem. We most often have visitors around the holidays and there’s nothing like waking up Thanksgiving or Christmas morning to find the dishwasher didn’t finish.
Hi, I’ve just installed a Bosch Dishwasher model SMS24AW01G series 2.
It has a Variospeed button, in the manual it explains what it does.
Nowhere in the manual does it tell you when or at what stage to engage the button.
Andy, my guess is you engage the button before you start the wash cycle. I’m not very familiar with that feature, but if you want to set up a diagnosis for more testing we certainly can! https://dev-neli-1.nelihome.com/book-an-appointment/

Greetings – I have a Silence PLus 50 dba Bosch dw. For the life of me, I can’t find the model number on any of the exposed surfaces. I’m not really equipped to pull the whole thing from under the counter so my question is: Am replacing the soap/drying agent unit. Why can’t I rectify the numbers on the dispensing unit itself….? When I enter in the stamped part numbers, I get things showing up for motorcycles and Dewalt tools. Any suggestions, please & thanks!
Cheers,
Steve D.
Hi Steve,
The model number is on the side (usually the left) of the door when open! If you still need help finding your model number you can try following the guide here: https://dev-neli-1.nelihome.com/find-your-model-number/
If you need anymore help you can make an appointment with me or any of our other techs at any time!

I would love to know if you can keep the display turned on while the dishwasher is running. I have the Bosch super silence plus 39 abd

Chris
Thank you William for sharing! This was lifesaver info! Worked on our Bosch!
Hi there I just moved to a new home and I have a Bosch SHE4AM12UC/03
It’s won’t reset at all and it will not get any water into the tub, I’ve taken the machine out , disconnected it checked all connections and they seam fine. Power is fine and water is connected as it should be Any ideas or is the panel fried ? Thanks Grant
I a appreciate your info. Hard 5 Sec push on start worked. Next time I’ll probably use hard start. Thanks again
My Bosch Lifestyle automatic dish washer just stopped. There are no lights on the control panel. It was pumping water out when it failed. I checked the powerpoint and it is fine. Is it worth repairing?
Kristy, we would be happy to help you find that out! It’s difficult to say without a diagnosis, so if you’d like to set up an appointment you can do that here: https://dev-neli-1.nelihome.com/book-an-appointment/
Hi,
I had to soft reset my dishwasher model Silence plus 44dBa. It worked but now when I start it, it beeps continually.
Can you help me, please !
Judith, did you ever figure this out? I’ve been having to do soft resets from time to time, but this last time, it didn’t work, after many attempts! So frustrating.
Thanks. Our older model just kept running for about 5 hours last night. I held down the Rinse & hold key and the Regular wash key for 5 seconds and it finally stopped, then drained. 🙏🏽🤩
This new bosch is a piece of junk! We are going to return ours. Having Had it for one week we have had nothing but problems with it. What a disappointment because I had a Bosh prior to this that we really liked. They have gone down significantly in their quality.
Hi, I have a sms25aw05e and I just loaded it and wanted to start a cycle when the water light and the rinse aid light started blinking simultaneusly. can’t seem to reset it. I’ve tried disconnecting the water supply to check if the filter was clogged but there were only 4 tiny particles that could not be the reason for any blockage. I don’t know how to open it/remove the red filter without damaging it.. is it screwed in or is it just a pull out sort of thing? the water supply has enough flow, Ive checked that also. Taking it off power supply (hard reset) also did not help.
If you have any suggestions I’d be happy to try before calling a technician.
My 4 yr old Bosch model SHX65T55 dishwasher stopped at sometime mid cycle. Now no lights or power at all. Tried turning the breaker off for 5-7 minutes. We did have a disposal problem (too many egg shells, which we fixed) a few hours prior to starting the dishwasher. I feel like it is related to the disposal issue, but with no power to dishwasher, my hands are tied.
Hi. I have the super silent plus 39dba. If I turn the machine on and press Auto but want to change it to 60 min before I even start the wash, I can’t make the switch, It won’t change from the Auto to 60 min without me playing with it, trying to reset it, turning it on and off…..there’s gotta be an easier way to change the cycle. Help please!
Hi Marcella, I’m sorry to hear you’re having that issue. If this article didn’t help you, you can check out our blog or look at our website to see if our online repair service would be helpful to you. You can set up a diagnosis appointment any time!
Hi! Our Bosch Ascenta dishwasher’s door is stuck in locked position. Pushing the start button for 5 seconds resets the cycle but not change the lock position. We still have been using it by putting chairs in front of the door to keep it closed, which works for now, but still a big nuisance. Any ideas how to fix it? Thanks so much in advance!
Ayse, we’d be happy to help you get that mechanism working again. It it’s not staying locked, you could try replacing the door locking mechanism entirely. If you need further diagnosing, check out our blog or website and set up a diagnosis with one of our techs. Thanks!
Hi! We have an old Bosch model SHU33A05UC. Last night it started making a loud noise after the wash cycle. I turned it off and restarted this morning. It moved onto rinse cycle but isn’t rinsing & draining and continues to make a loud noise. The cancel & drain function is not working. I tried to reset by turning off the breaker & waiting 7 minutes, but is still making the same noise. Any suggestions?
Hey, thanks for the blog article. Really Cool.
Looking forward to reading more. Great blog. Want more.
It worked! The hard reset worked. I just want to say THANK YOU for the advice!!!!
I really liked your blog.Much thanks again. Fantastic.
Just wanted to say, thanks for the helpful advise, the 5-7 minutes cut off power reset worked to address our problem. Really appreciated the wisdom. I will make sure I pay a nice gesture forward to others.
We have brand new 24″ Recessed handle 300 Series DW, model #SHEM63W56N
Frustrating as heck to select cycles and options! Finally, my husband has figured it out but Not Me.
So, I will just run it in whatever cycle it’s in when I start it…this unit is not cheap and we are very disappointed, are considering returning it, but for the hassle of doing so.
Another problem, the door isn’t drying by end of cycle, totally wet as are some dishes partially so.
Does one always have to use extra dry cycle?
Really good but there’s a typo in the opening paragraph unsure if your aware
Bought a new Bosch 500 seris SHXM65Z55N through word of mouth how good they are.Had Kitchen Aids forever but my last one started leaking and ruined my new floor.
Anywho The Auto Air feature doesn’t seem to be working. We called Bosch customer Service,SMH no help, read all the information that came with my DW to no avail the Door does not automatically open after the cool down period .Help
Janet, I’m so sorry to hear that. We would be happy to help you. To make an appointment with one of our technicians, just go to this page here: https://dev-neli-1.nelihome.com/book-an-appointment/
BOSCH SHE45M05UC/53

LAST NIGHT THE KIDS PUT A TEDDY BEAR IN THERE TORE IT UP TO SHREDS WHAT A MESS SMOKE COMES OUT THE BOTTOM OF THE DISHWASHER NOW PLEASE HELP I AM SCARED IF THE HOUSE IS GOING TO FLOOD OR BURN DOWN TO THE GROUND OR BOTH.
My time and auto light are blinking on my Bosch silenceplus46dBA the start button reset does nothing. Can you help it’s only a year old
Hi Mike, I have the same model. Curious as to how you rectified your problem. Thanks.
Thank you so much! My Bosch SilencePlus 50 dBa would not change cycles, and I thought the button or controller was broken. I tried your advice for a reset, and voila! It must have been interrupted in a cycle, because I heard the pump motor and it showed 1 minute on the timer. After that finished, I was able to turn it back on and select my cycle.
Again, thank you so much!! Great advice! 😊
The hard reset of the circuit breaker in the off position for >5 minutes totally worked just now on my BOSCH SilencePlus dBa 40. The on off button was not working, but the interior light was on, so a quick on off of the circuit breaker did not work. Thank you SOOOOO much for saving me the repair bill.
Nice read, I just passed this onto a friend who was doing a little research on that. And he just bought me lunch as I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch!
TY for posting, it was unbelieveably informative and helped me a ton
Our dishwasher turns on but it is not pumping water. It sounds like it is running, but no water. What can I do??
I’m having issues with heating, it isn’t heating at all this everything is being washed with cold water! Anyone got any ways to find out the issue here please?
I used the machine care button to do a clean in dishwasher Now the light and 1 hr 30mind is will not go off. Have tried to reset but to no avail.
We just bought a new Bosch dishwasher but it’s not working. We tried all troubleshooting mentioned above . tried hard set also (switching off the mcb).
I’ve got the same issue
